Hes signed a one year AHL contract with the Heat, and is being offered a tryout as a non-roster invitee. They could then chose to sign him to an NHL contract if they so wish.

Hard working player, great attitude. Very cheap player to have around with a young team...as long as he can still keep up. Begin is a class act.

I could do without Begin, but if he plays hard in camp then he deserves it.

Any news on other try out players? Have to think that some of the UFA's will sign a tryout soon if they can not get signed. Calgary would have to be at the top of the list if they want a real chance to break into lineup.

Nothing....I get the impression no one wants to do anything until they have a better idea of what they have, or dont. Not just the Flames, either.

He's a grinder, big heart and just wants to play. He was on the Fan last week and said as much. I suspect we'll have a sh*tload of roster moves this year so why not if he impresses at camp?

Completely agree with you on this one, Colin. Begin is exactly the type of player a rebuilding team should look for - a veteran with a strong work ethic who can mentor the younger guys, without having such a substantial impact so as to drop them a couple of spots down the draft board.

I have a better question.....WHY????

I'd rather him down in ABB showing the young guys down there how to be a pro. Up here he is useless. I do understand the invite, but VERY slim chances he makes the team.

He's the one guy, consistently throughout the year, who was ecstatic every time the team did something well. They score a goal, whether he was in the play or even on the ice or not, he had a grin from ear to ear. When he scored it was even more. While he may be a help in ABB, the team is going to struggle this year and you need a guy in the lineup with that kind of attitude to help make sure the young guys who are there don't fall into a losing mentality. He is the definition of a character guy and even if he sees the bench all game he's the kind of guy that will light up the bench and will do everything physically possible, whenever he is given the chance, to play to the best of his abilities on the ice. That's why.

I just don't buy the whole veteran mentorship thing.....the kids will be fine, and there's a few vets around to lend a hand when things don't go their way.

So many unsigned FAs that would be better options as a Vet or Leader for the kids

"Brian Burke is taking part in a @LlyodBobcats charity event tomo night. For all those fired up about potential being @NHLFlames press." - Josh Humphries from the Fan 960. Also his daughter lives in Calgary, could be stopping in to see her before the event. Don't get too excited.

Maybe they should just give Craig Conroy a shot.
